In the year 2008, we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of our Valley Chapel. In honor of this occasion, we will be sponsoring The Moving Wall. The Moving Wall is a one half size replica of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC. The wall will be on display next to our Funeral Home in Elkhorn, Nebraska at 21901 W. Maple Rd. from June 19, 2008 to June 23, 2008. We plan to have two ceremonies conducted during this time. About THE MOVING WALLâ„¢
"The Moving Wall" is the half-size replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for more than twenty years. When John Devitt attended the 1982 dedication in Washington, he felt the positive power of "The Wall." He vowed to share that experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington.
John, Norris Shears, Gerry Haver, and other Vietnam veteran volunteers built The Moving Wall. It went on display for the first time in Tyler, Texas in October of 1984. Two structures of The Moving Wall now travel the USA from April through November, spending about a week at each site.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial recognizes and honors the men and women who served in one of America's most divisive wars. The memorial grew out of a need to heal the nation's wounds as America struggled to reconcile different moral and political points of view. In fact, the memorial was conceived and designed to make no political statement whatsoever about the war. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a place where everyone, regardless of opinion, can come together and remember and honor those who served. By doing so, the memorial has paved the way towards reconciliation and healing, a process that continues today. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial accomplishes these goals through the three components that comprise the memorial: the Wall of names, the Three Servicemen Statue and Flagpole, and the Vietnam Women's Memorial. The Patriot Guard and American Legion Riders will escort the wall into town on Thursday, June 19, 2008 around 8 A.M. Viewing of the Wall will begin at noon.
Our main ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 2 PM on site of the display. The guest speaker will be LTC Doug Ladd from the Nebraska National Guard. All the hosting American Legion and V.F.W. Organizations will participate. We expect a large crowd, so feel free to bring a lawn chair for your comfort.
In addition to the display of the wall, we will display 395 white crosses to honor the Nebraskans who died during the war and a POW/MIA table remembering those who are still missing.
We will have a nightly ceremony beginning at 8 P.M. consisting of the reading of the names of the 395 Nebraska casualties listed on the wall, followed by taps.
There will be parking on site and off-site with shuttle service.
