John Stuart Watters

John Stuart Watters was born December 3, 1947 in Flint, Michigan to Donald and Evelyn (Stoffel) Watters. He grew up in Michigan before the family moved to California, where he graduated from Hoover High School in 1965. Growing up, John enjoyed muscle cars, street racing, and cooking with his mom. John served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from February 1968 until his honorable discharge in July 1970. John married Amber Miller on October 21, 1980 in Glendale, California. With this union, John gained a daughter, Julie. In 1981, the couple welcomed their son Brian to their family, and made their home in Glendale, before moving to Omaha, Nebraska. In 1990, John started his own business, Sunset Lawns. He owned and operated the business for several years, before selling his share, but remained with the company as a service technician. John took great pride in caring for his customers yards, and was still working just a week before he passed away. John was a humble, kind, helpful, man, who was highly dependable, and laidback. He enjoyed cooking, grilling, attending hockey games, and the occasional trip to the casino. John listened to old country music, and cheered for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Rams. He had a sweet tooth, could often be found drinking a Coke, and appreciated dinner out at Romeo’s Mexican, or any number of great steak houses. His favorite pastime was fishing, and he was especially proud of the Channel Catfish he caught in 2000 at Lake Zorinsky to earn his Master Angler award. Most of all, he cherished his family. John’s ability to bring smiles, joy, and kindness to family, friends, and customers every day is what leaves us mourning the loss of his beautiful life. John passed away at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the age of 71 years, 4 months, and 17 days. He was preceded in death by his parents Don & Evelyn, brothers Don, Rod, and William, and sister Macrina Watters. John is survived by his wife Amber of Omaha, son & daughter-in-law Brian & Elizabeth Watters of Elkhorn, daughter & son-in-law Julie Van Dyke & John Harless of Charlotte, NC, granddaughters Alexis, Carly, and Aubrey, and brother Charlie Watters of Omaha. John S. Watters, age 71, of Omaha, died 4/20/19. Preceded in death by parents Don & Evelyn, brothers Don, Rod, and William, sister Macrina Watters. Survived by wife Amber of Omaha, son & daughter-in-law Brian & Elizabeth Watters of Elkhorn, daughter & son-in-law Julie Van Dyke & John Harless of Charlotte, NC, granddaughters Alexis, Carly, and Aubrey, and brother Charlie Watters of Omaha. Memorial service 11 AM Thursday at the funeral home in Elkhorn. Inurnment at Prospect Hill Cemetery of Elkhorn with military honors. Memorials to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
