Alan William Cox

Al was born on March 28, 1955, in Dyer, Indiana. Though he grew up in Omaha, Nebraska,some of his fondest childhood memories were made during summers spent back in Indiana with his sisters, Pat and Rita, and his brother-in-law, Jerry. From a young age, Al developed a strong work ethic and a natural curiosity for how things worked. He spent many weekends alongside his father, who worked for a trucking company, learning to repair and rebuild engines. Those hours in the garage sparked a passion that would define much of Al’s life. Determined to grow his skills, Al attended trade school in Chicago to become an auto technician. While living there, Al did what he would continue to do his entire life; build, fix, and improve. Piece by piece, he built a motorcycle in the living room of his apartment. Building it inside was one thing, but when the time came to leave Chicago his plan for how to get the completed custom motorcycle out of the apartment was not thought out. Without hesitation, Al asked his neighbor to help steady the door and balcony banister so Al could ride the motorcycle off the apartment balcony and back to Omaha-a story that perfectly captures his ingenuity, boldness, and sense of adventure. In 1976, Al returned to Omaha and began working at Atchley Ford, where fate would introduce him to the love of his life, Nina. Nina worked at the dealership as a courtesy car driver, and one of Al’s favorite stories from that time was how she mistakenly called him “Mel” for their first two weeks together. He never corrected her until his official uniform arrived and she noticed his name badge read “Al.” That story became a cherished reminder of how their journey together began. Al and Nina were married in 1977. Together they raised three daughters-Cassie, Sabrina, and Taylor. After Nina’s sister tragically passed away, he lovingly welcomed another daughter, Nicole to complete his family. Al was a devoted husband and father, who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Al’s talent as a technician was extraordinary. His ability to diagnose and repair engines set him apart in the automotive industry. He spent ten years working for Nissan, where his skills were quickly recognized on a national level. Al competed in the Nissan International Service Technical Contest in Japan, earning multiple awards, including Technician of the Year. His achievements were featured in magazines, newspapers, and advertisements. After many years in the automotive field, Al chose to give back by teaching the next generation. He became an adjunct faculty member at Metropolitan Community College and transitioned to full-time teaching in 2011. Al had a deep passion for education and took pride in ensuring his students understood not only engines, but the realities and responsibilities of working in the industry. His impact lives on through the countless students he mentored and inspired. Outside of work, Al was constantly busy with hobbies and projects as an accomplished carpenter and artist, a winemaker, and an early adopter of technology. He loved building and fixing computers and found freedom on the open road as an avid Harley Davidson rider. His perfect afternoon was simple: a long ride, a glass of whiskey, and soaking up the sun in his pool. Above all else, Al loved his family fiercely. He cherished time spent with his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, and grandsons. While his professional accomplishments were outstanding and a great source of pride for him, he spent the last few years reflecting and reconnecting with his family. This time for him was the happiest of his life and we all got to see his love for those around him flourish. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved daughter, Cassie, and his grandson, Nash, whom he held close in his heart every day. He is survived by his wife, Nina; his children, Sabrina (Rob) Hughes, Taylor (Jarit) Euerle, and Nicole (Luke) Foley; and his grandsons, Tristian, Max, Jack, and Cade. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were lucky enough to know him. The Family is all wearing his Harley Davidson gear and that he would like everyone to dress comfortably and casually. Harley gear is encouraged. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
