Arthur Anthony Carter

Arthur Anthony Carter was born on Wednesday, August 23, 1950. He was welcomed by his loving parents Don and Rose “Mickey” Carter and his sisters Rosie and Donna “Cakie.” Art did not stay the baby for long he was soon joined by his baby sister Susie and little brother Donnie. Growing up in South Omaha he made great friends and enjoyed playing sports. He loved running free and spending time with his Grandma Carter, who gave him his nickname “Bum.” Trouble did seem to have a way of finding Art. Depending on who you ask, it was never his fault…his sisters were the real trouble makers. If you were to ask his sisters they would tell a different story. A story about a little brother who liked to twist his sisters’ arms behind their backs and call them names. However, his little brother Donnie would say that he was very protective and would be the first one there to stick up for them. Art loved being outdoors hunting and fishing with his Dad and Grandfathers. If Art was missing, the fishing poles were too. After graduating from South High in 1969 Art enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany. In 1974, Art was introduced to his wife Iris by his good friend, Bob Farley. Iris was in for a surprise, she knew that Art loved to fish. What she did not know was that their honeymoon was going to be fishing under a bridge at Logan Creek…but they did have a bucket of chicken so not all bad. Once the rain started Art did end up taking Iris to nice hotel with a fancy round bed. A short time later Art became a father. Art was always a man of few words but the love he showed his daughters Gina and Jaime was without measure. Art shared his love of the outdoors with his children, nieces and nephews. His youngest Jaime would say she was Dad’s “favorite.” She will always remember working in the garden with him, fishing and how proud he was of her when she got her first deer. Art’s oldest Gina may disagree with her little sister about being the “favorite” but she would definitely agree that fishing with Dad is a treasured memory. Being more of an indoor girl some of Gina’s favorite time with her Dad was spent watching movies and talking. Art loved a good western or action movie almost as much as watching sports, especially football. Art’s family grew when his daughters met brothers Adam and Nick who became sons to him. With the arrival of Art’s first grandchild, Dominic a new season in his life began. Everything was now about “the grandkids.” They could do no wrong in his eyes and he was devoted to them. Art would drive miles each day to get Dominic or as he affectionately called him “Bubba.” Picking him up in his blue truck Dominic loved when Grandpa would let him drive it in the yard. The drive was worth it just so he could spend the day with him on the farm. Teaching his granson to pee on his aunt’s tires, drive the lawn mower, and wrestle. Art loved his new role in life. When his granddaughter Sierra arrived, Art had a new partner in crime. They loved to prank each other, talk football, and watch WWE. Sierra will never forget the time her Grandpa Art cut all her shoelaces out of her new Jordan’s. Just when Art thought he had his hands full his little cowboy, Anthony came along. He now had someone to share his love of “The Duke” with. Anthony and Grandpa could spend all day watching John Wayne movies, looking at guns and fishing. With the arrival of Mariah Shea, Art now had a racing buddy. Mariah will always remember the trip her grandpa took with her too see a live NASCAR race or the time they went to Milford lake fishing. After 43 years of marriage Iris will treasure the memories of time spent together with Art; watching Wheel of Fortune, laughing about the grandkids and fighting over who ate the last of their favorite foods. Art would always say a “mouse must have ate it,” whenever the sweets where gone. Iris would say “Art you were up all night.” Art and Iris truly honored their wedding vows to care for each other in sickness and in health...through good times and bad. Taking turns being each other support and caregivers became a true testament of the love they shared for each other. Art was loved by many and will be greatly missed. He showed us how to be strong when things were hard, how to stand up for the ones you love, and how to be patience. He will be remembered as a wonderful Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend. But most of all he will be forever loved and at peace. Arthur A. Carter, age 67 of Omaha, passed away at home on August 7. He was preceded in death by his sister Susie and niece Michelle. Survived by his wife Iris J. Carter, daughters Gina (Adam) Carter-Jensen and Jaime (Nick) Jensen, beloved grandchildren Dominic, Sierra, Anthony, and Mariah, parents Rose and Don Carter, siblings Rosie (Fred) Puetz, Donna “Cakie” Cardella, and Donnie Carter, nieces, nephews. He will be remembered and missed by family and friends. Funeral service Noon Monday with visitation from 10 AM until Noon, all at the funeral home in Elkhorn. Military honors to follow by American Legion Post #331 and members of the active duty Army Reserve. Private interment. Memorials to the family. A lunch reception will follow the funeral at the Elkhorn Eagle's Club, 20276 Wirt Street, Elkhorn, NE 68022.
