Byron Bok Thompson

Byron Thompson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather (Papa) and friend, passed away on August 13, 2026, at the age of 86, after suffering a heart attack. Born on December 14, 1939, in Watertown, South Dakota, Byron was the cherished son of Penn and Leonice Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his dear sister, Janet Walden, nephews Chuck and Tim Walden and beloved dog, Sadie. Byron graduated from Watertown High School in 1957, and his pursuit of knowledge led him to Northern State University, where he graduated in 1963. Armed with his education and a strong work ethic, Byron moved to Omaha, Nebraska, embarking on a distinguished accounting career that began at Wilson Concrete. In 1968, he joined Kwik-Kafe, which later became the Swanson Corporation, where he dedicated his expertise until his retirement in 2005. In September 1963, Byron married the love of his life, Karen Torper, in the serene surroundings of rural Hamlin County, South Dakota. Together, they built a life filled with love and shared many cherished moments over their 63 years of marriage. Byron is survived by his devoted wife, Karen; his children, Denise (Ken) Petersen and Doug (Lori) Thompson; and his grandchildren, Emily (Cory) Devine, Cogan (Kylie) Petersen, Cassie (Richard) Johnson, Chase (Sophia) Schopen, Ben (Alysha) Thompson, and Maggie Thompson (Trevor Stevens). His legacy continues through his seven great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Fred Walden and nephew Kevin (Melody) Walden. He leaves behind many lifelong friends whom he loved and will remember him dearly. Byron was a man of deep faith and community spirit. A dedicated member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn, he also contributed to the community through his involvement with the Lions Club and the Elks Club. Byron’s gentle nature and infectious smile were constants in the lives of those who knew him. Byron had a deep love for sports and proudly wore his favorite team sweatshirts as he tuned in to cheer on his teams. He was a devoted fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Creighton Bluejays, Duke Blue Devils, South Dakota Jackrabbits, and Northern State Wolves. His passion and enthusiasm for the game were truly contagious, bringing immense joy not only to him, but also to everyone lucky enough to share those moments with him. Beyond his commitments, Byron found joy in the simple pleasures of life—treasuring his faith, family, friends, and a cold Busch Light shared in good company. He was well known and adored by the employees at the Union Pizzeria and Oscar’s Pizza. His wisdom, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone he met. A service to celebrate Byron’s life will be held on August 18th, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn, Nebraska. A visitation will be held at Reichmuth Funeral Home on August 17th, 2026 from 5:00-7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Bethany Lutheran Church in memory of Byron Thompson. Byron's life was a testament to love, dedication, and the impact one person can have on the world. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
