Carol Jean Harter

Carol Jean Bailey was born on September 3, 1938 in York Nebraska. She was the first child of Rex and Merna Bailey. Carol went to Country School and McCool Jct High School. As a young lady she loved to cook and sew. She was very active in 4H. After High School Carol moved to Lincoln to attend the Lincoln Business School and worked at Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph. This is where she was introduced to Don Harter by Don Geis. Ten Months later Don and Carol were married at Sacred Heart Church in Beaver Crossing. They moved to Omaha and set up house. Soon after Darcy was born, followed by Marty, Dave, Steve, Matt and finally another girl – Kristy. Carol had 6 children in 7 years. Her path was set, she was to be a Mother. With 6 children Carol was very busy. She wore many hats. Most important, each child knew they were loved and she would do anything for them. She had a heart of gold and was the World’s Best Mother. As the years passed and the nest got empty Carol and Don had time for themselves. In 1985 they purchased their first Motor Home and started traveling. Twenty Seven years later they had owned 7 different motorhomes and visited 48 of the 50 states. They belonged to the Heartland Travelers and made many friends through motor coaching. Carol and Don just celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. She was so proud of all the years they had together. They had a true deep love for each other. They were Husband and Wife but more so Best Friends. Carol enjoyed crafts, reading and she did crossword puzzles in ink! She watched her soap opera and Wheel of Fortune and was known to enjoy a good glass of merlot. Her Grand and Great Grandchildren were her joy. They were her legacy. Carol was a very strong and determined woman. She never complained and always had a smile for you. She had a wonderful smile. God took her home on Thanksgiving which happens to be her favorite holiday. So, she got to share it with her family here and her family in Heaven. She was a very blessed lady. Carol J. Harter, age 77 of Elkhorn, died 11/26/15. Preceded in death by parents Rex and Merna Bailey and grandson Justin Knight. Survived by husband Donald of Elkhorn, daughters: Darcy (Patrick) Barry of Elkhorn and Kristy (Brian) Leahy of Omaha, sons: Marty (Beth) of Elkhorn, David (Debra) of Omaha, Steve (Amy) of Omaha, and Matthew (Tracy) of Omaha, 18 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, sister Sherry Clark of York, NE, and brother Roger Bailey of McCool Junction, NE. Funeral service 10:30 AM Monday, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Elkhorn. Interment Resurrection Cemetery, Omaha. Visitation with the family Sunday from 4-6 PM at the funeral home in Elkhorn with a Wake service at 6 PM. Memorials to the St. Patrick’s Building Fund or the American Lung Association.
