Frank LeGrand

Francis Martin LeGrand was born on May 14, 1927 in Fremont, Nebraska to Walter and Ethel (Andresen) LeGrand. He grew up on a farm north of Valley where he attended Lone Tree Country School before graduating from Fremont High School in 1944. As a young boy, when he wasn’t helping with chores Frank enjoyed swimming, boxing and his horse Trixie. Frank married Jo Morris on September 27, 1947 at her parents’ home in Elk City and they were blessed with four children: David, Bob, Jon and Cathy. Frank and Jo raised their family in Elk City and Elkhorn before moving to Waterloo in 1959. Frank has worked on the farm, a grocery store, foreman for State of Nebraska Highway Department, manager of the Waterloo Lumber Yard and maintenance for Golden Years and Valhaven Nursing Homes before retiring in 1989. He enjoyed fishing, vacations to Minnesota and following his grandchildren’s activities. Frank loved to tease his grandchildren and could many times be seen “blowing on his thumb while he flexed his bicep” much to their amazement. He was honest and loyal. Frank enjoyed oyster stew, whiskey sour and dinner at Farmer Brown’s but his favorite was breakfast. Breakfast anywhere as long as there were friends or soon to be friends to visit with. Frank’s pet peeves were doctor bills and lawyers. Frank passed away on Friday, January 20, 2012 at Golden Living Valhaven in Valley, Nebraska with his family at his side at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 6 days. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Ethel, brother Pete and his wife Pat and brothers-in-law Donald Watson and Ben Wesley. Frank is survived by his wife Jo; sons and daughters-in-law David and Susan of Nebraska City, NE, Bob and Diana of Bennington, NE and Jon and Amy of Omaha; Daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Joel McDermott of Omaha; 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; sisters Margaret Wesley of North Bend, NE and Pat LeGrand of Clayton, NC; cousins Donald and Sandi Morris of Omaha; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marylu and Elmer Wesemann of Blair, NE; LeGrand, Frank age 84 of Waterloo, NE Survived by wife Jo; sons and daughters-in-law David and Susan of Nebraska City, NE, Bob and Diana of Bennington, NE and Jon and Amy of Omaha; Daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Joel McDermott of Omaha; 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; sisters Margaret Wesley of North Bend, NE and Pat LeGrand of Clayton, NC; cousins Donald and Sandi Morris of Omaha; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marylu and Elmer Wesemann of Blair, NE; Visitation on Monday from noon to 8 PM with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
