George Warren Madsen

George W. Madsen, age 87 of Omaha, died at Methodist Hospital in Omaha on Friday, March 19, 2021. He was preceded in death by: his parents, George & Hattie Madsen; brother, Rex Pearson; sister-in-law, Peggy Pearson; and grandson Andrew Todd Madsen. George is survived by wife Julie Madsen. His children. Jim (Renate) Madsen, Kathy Baughman, Tom (Michelle) Madsen and step children: Carrie (George) Meiers, Kirk (Sue) Swartzbaugh. Grandchildren: Alex Baughman, Marty Baughman, Kimberly (Dustin) Day, Samantha (Kevin) Larson, Kate Madsen, Sarah Madsen, Mitchell Madsen, Cassandra (Chris) Nixon, Alan Wheeler, Andy (Cindy) Wheeler, Maggie Meiers, Jessie Meiers, Karson Swartzbaugh, Reed Swartzbaugh and 10 great grandchildren. He also had many nieces and nephews with whom he liked to visit. Born in Homer, NE and raised in Dakota City, NE. George was educated in a one room school house and later graduated from South Sioux City High School (1951). He went on the University of Nebraska (1957) and finished his schooling earning an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School (1961). George’s working positions include: The Broyhill Company, Valmont Industries, where he traveled internationally for many years, Monsanto Chemical Company and The Garst Seed Company. He also spent time as a real estate agent in Omaha. His last career move was creating Voyages Extraordinaire, a travel agency specializing in cruises and the publishing of Profiles of Ships a ship reference manual for travel agents. George served as board member for 3 Danish organizations including the Nebraska District Danish Brotherhood in America. He was a member of Toastmasters International achieving his personal TM designation: ATM- bronze. George also as served as a president of several Toastmaster clubs. He enjoyed being an active supporter of the Mid America Council of Boy Scouts of America, earning a MAC Silver Beaver Award for his efforts. For over 50 years he was a member of Omadi Lodge #5 Masons and Abu Bekr Shrine. During retirement George volunteered at Joslyn Art Museum, Lauritzen Gardens and at the Danish Archive Museum in Blair. George loved to travel with Julie and as he would tell others that he and Julie got to travel the world to see all the continents except Antarctica. He would tell different stories from his travels during dinner parties and family gatherings. Memorial service will be held at 11 am, Friday, March 26, 2021 at Reichmuth Funeral Home in Elkhorn with burial of ashes at Prospect Hill Cemetery following the service. Visitation with the family will be held Thursday, March 25, 2021 from 5 pm till 7 pm with a 7 pm Masonic Service at the Reichmuth Funeral Home.
