Gordon E. Whitmore

Gordon E. Whitmore was born February 27, 1930 in Davenport, Nebraska to William Henry and Clara Ida (Judy) Whitmore. He grew up on a farm, attended country school, and graduated from Davenport High School in 1947. Gordon enlisted in the United States Army on January 7, 1949, and was honorably discharged on September 17, 1952. Gordon married Helen Slagle on March 19, 1952 in Evanston, Illinois, and to this union, four children were born: Gordon Eugene, Susan Kay, Lynn Marie, and William Alex Whitmore. Gordon worked at the Nebraska Ordinance Plant, Omaha Steel Works, Yutan Lumber, Rockbrook Inn, and retired from Builder’s Supply Company after 24 years in August of 1995. Gordon enjoyed camping and fishing with family and friends, gardening, home repair, and time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His passion was cooking, and he loved to help at the Fish Fry’s with the American Legion and the suppers at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. He was a dedicated fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Gordon passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at the Hospice House in Omaha at the age of 78 years, 6 months, and 25 days. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Clara Ida (Judy) Whitmore, wife Helen, son Gordon Eugene Whitmore, sisters Ruth Stacy, Beulah Fayle, and brothers William Franklin Whitmore and Jarvis Whitmore. Gordon is survived by his son William (Bill) Whitmore of Omaha, daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Richard Laaker of Fairfield, NE, and daughter Susan Whitmore of Yutan; 5 grandchildren: Scott and wife, Roberta Laaker of Deshler, NE, Theresa and husband, Brian Mangers of Junitia, NE, Jackie Whitmore of Mansfield, TX, Marie Kay and husband, Eric Henderson of Mansfield, TX, and Gordon Eugene Whitmore, Jr. of Texas; 8 great grandchildren: Travoya and Braniesha Johnson of Mansfield, TX, Brenton Laaker of Bloomington, IL, Colt and Cooper Laaker of Deshler, NE, Kylie and Kaleb Mangers of Junitia, NE, and Avery Henderson of Mansfield, TX, sisters; Geneva Schoenrock of Fairbury, NE, and Edna and husband, Orville Mothan of Lincoln, NE, sister-in-law Ida Jean Whitmore of Oceanside, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
