Helen Virginia Winkler

Helen (Graham) Winkler was born March 10, 1920 in Silver Creek, Nebraska to Donald and Gertrude (Galimore) Graham. Helen attended grade school and high school in Stromsburg where she also participated in sports, winning ribbons for running. The family moved to Petersburg where Helen met Henry Winkler. They were married August 16, 1938 and were blessed with six children: Roxie, twins Leah and Larry, Don, Terry and Sheila. They resided in Petersburg until 1959 when they settled in Valley, Nebraska for the remainder of their lives. Helen was a devoted wife and mother who thoroughly enjoyed time with her children and really cherished the moments with grands and great grands. She enjoyed 20 years of employment at Brandeis/Younkers in Omaha. She was very active in her church, St. John’s Catholic Church in Valley and participated in Altar Society, funeral luncheon group and Lenten fish fries. Helen volunteered the Care Center and Assisted Living. She was very social, enjoying Bunco, Red Hats and many new friends. Helen loved to travel, covering many miles. Helen passed away Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha at the age of 91 years, 7 months and 19 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Henry, brother Loren and sister Donna Prunty. Helen is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Diane of Colorado Springs, CO, Don and Shirley of Omaha and Terry and Connie of Valley; daughters and sons-in-law Roxie and Terry Lewis of Elkhorn, Leah and Gurney Pittenger of North Bend, NE and Sheila Winkler of Omaha; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; brother Robert Graham of Delta, CO; many other relatives and friends. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
