James Dolan

James Vincent Dolan was born on November 11, 1938 in Washington, DC, to Dr. John A. and Philomena (Vance) Dolan and passed away on May 20, 2012, at his home in Yutan, Nebraska, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He grew up in Washington, DC, where he graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School in 1956, Georgetown University in 1960, and Georgetown University Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Georgetown Law Review, in 1963. After graduating from law school, Jim clerked for Judge Charles Fahy of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. After his clerkship, Jim was an attorney at Steptoe and Johnson in Washington, DC, where he became partner. In 1983, Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Nebraska hired him to be its Vice-President of Law. During his tenure as Vice-President - Law he played a significant role in Union Pacific's acquisition of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 2002 he became Vice-Chairman for the railroad, where he focused on a number of system-wide issues as a result of the merger. He retired from the railroad in 2004. In 1983, he was president of the prestigious Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD. After moving to Nebraska, he served on the boards of the Henry Doorly Zoo and Spirit Catholic Radio - KVSS, in Omaha. Jim married Anne Reilly on June 18, 1960 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Washington, DC and Jim and Anne had two children – Caroline McSherry and James Reilly. Anne and Jim made their home in the DC area until 1984, when they moved to Omaha. They moved again in 1996 to Yutan, Nebraska, to live on their farm, Jimando Farms, which became one of the top Quarter Horse breeding farms in Nebraska. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers Jack and Tom, and his wife Anne. Jim is survived by his daughter Sherry Ormond of New Orleans, LA; his son Reilly Dolan of Washington, DC, and three grandchildren, Tom and Will Dolan and James Ormond.
