James Manuel Nilius

James Manuel “Jim” Nilius was born January 18, 1933 in Villisca, Iowa to Charles L. and Olga Nilius. The family moved to Omaha within a short time following his birth. He attended several grade schools in Douglas County and graduated from Irvington High School in 1951. Throughout high school and during the summers, Jim worked at Peony Park. He was drafted in 1953 and served in the US Army during the Korean War. Jim married Patricia “Pat” Markey on November 19, 1955 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Omaha, and to this union, five children were born: James, Jr., Dennis, Richard, Theodore, and Mary Patricia. Jim was a journeyman plasterer and worked a number of years with various plastering contractors before becoming an independent contractor in 1976 until his retirement in 2003. Jim passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at his home in Bennington, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, 7 months, and 14 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Olga, brothers Eugene and Gerald, and grandchildren Andrew and Jessica(Ted & Vicki). Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pat, son James and wife Lori (Amy and Eric); son Dennis and wife Marcia (Amanda, Alex, Emily, Jennifer, and Austin); son Richard (Dustin (Sara) and Sarah (Jose) Aguirre, and great-granddaughter Azalia); son Ted and wife Vicki (Ted, David, and Michael); and daughter Mary Pat Schwery and husband Darrin (Devon and Jared); brothers Donald and Charles (Phyllis), sisters-in-law Marialice and Joyce Nilius; brother-in-law Everett Markey, and sisters-in-law Mary (Roman) Lech; Lauretta (Tom) Bruce and Linda Lazer, and many nieces and nephews. Jim donated his body to the Nebraska Anatomical Board and inurnment at Resurrection Cemetery will take place at a later date. Make yourself familiar with the angels, and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you. Military honors by Fremont VFW Post #854 & Legion Post #20.
