Kathleen A Miller

Kathleen A. Valasek Miller was born on July 19, 1927 in Duncan, Nebraska to Lonnie and Stella (Nitko) Valasek. She grew up in Omaha where she attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School and High School graduating in 1945. As a young girl, Kathleen enjoyed travelling with her father to St. Louis, Chicago and Black Duck, Minnesota. She was very social and loved to be with her friends and family. Kathleen married Frederick W. Hopkins on April 26, 1947 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska and they were blessed with six children: Rick, Karen, Mark, Jeff, Greg and Kim. They lived in Omaha for a few years before moving to their acreage south of Waterloo. Frederick passed away in December of 1965. Kathleen married Bernie Miller on November 24, 1969 and they continued to make their home near Waterloo. Kathleen worked at Union Pacific for a short time. She then owned the Hoppy’s Bar in South Omaha with her husband before moving to Waterloo where they owned and operated Hoppy’s Bar and Lake. In later years, Kathleen worked at Walmart. Kathleen enjoyed bowling, watching baseball and following the children’s activities. She was a good cook, a woman of strong faith and a stickler for correct English and spelling. Kathleen was a strong, proud, loving woman with a stubborn streak. She treasured family gatherings up until the very end. Kathleen was a rare person who was a fan of both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. She enjoyed a good cup of coffee and sweets of any kind. Kathleen was often frustrated with her electronic remotes and when disgusted, could be heard saying “Och sam ach.” Kathleen passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 12 days. She was preceded in death by her parents Lonnie and Stella, husband Frederick and sisters Jean and LaVerne. Kathleen is survived by her husband Bernie; children: Rick and Maggie Hopkins of Big Fork, MT, Karen Hascall of Omaha, NE, Mark and Deb Hopkins of Omaha, NE , Jeff and Jacquie Hopkins of Schuyler, NE, Greg and Kathy Hopkins of Waterloo, NE and Kim and Tim East of Hamilton, MO; 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
