Larry Stephen Dunbar

Larry was born to Galen and Eldene Dunbar in Burwell, Nebraska, the fourth child of nine. As a young child he and his family moved to Elkhorn, Nebraska where he became a lifelong resident, creating childhood memories and eventually establishing a homestead known to family and friends as “The Farm”. Through his youth he excelled at many sports, but specifically varsity football. He enjoyed going hunting and fishing with his brothers and grandparents and spending summers with his grandparents in Taylor, Nebraska. He married his high school sweetheart, Lori Belter, on June 7, 1975. Together they raised two beautiful and loving daughters Lynette and Jessie. He and Lori were eventually blessed with a grandson, Noah, and four granddaughters, Julia, Ashlyn, Violet, and Ellie. One of Larry’s favorite pastimes was spending time with his grandchildren and watching their sporting events. He was a proud grandfather whose grandchildren had inherited many of his athletic talents and they lovingly wore his varsity number “32” as their own. He was passionate about the outdoors, hunting, fishing and was a member of the Elkhorn Valley Rifle Club. He made several hunting and fishing trips to Canada and enjoyed a memorable hunting trip to Africa. He took great pleasure sharing his love of the outdoors with Lori, his grandchildren, and other family members and friends. Larry and Lori were spending their “semi” retirement years together with their family, going on hunting trips, camping, tending their property and annual garden, and hosting family and friend get-togethers at The Farm. Larry was always willing to chauffeur Lori around whether it was to wineries locally or afar, to the grocery store or to the local Menards. Lori in return always made sure his morning coffee break was ready at 10am and dinner at 6pm. He still called Lori his “lovely bride” and it was very common to see them holding hands. Underneath his rough exterior and “Popeye” arms he had a kind and loving heart. His family was his world. Larry was a hands-on man who could do and fix pretty much anything. During high school he worked for various local farmers. He went on to work at Mission Ornamental Iron and then Remodeling by Oltmann’s. Larry spent several years as a self employed remodeling contractor until the year 2000 when he decided to utilize his talents and abilities, starting his own successful business, Dunbar Construction. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Galen and Eldene Dunbar; grandparents Chet and Rita Dunbar, Art and Gladys (his birthday buddy) Coleman and brother-in-law Jim "Melvin" Belter. He is survived by his lovely bride of 48 years, Lori, daughters Lynette (Alfredo) Montes, Jessie (Andrew) Franks, and grandchildren Noah, Julia, Ashlyn, Violet, and Ellie. Also survived by siblings, Shirley (John) Leftwich, Jerry (Dodi) Dunbar, Gale (Nancy) Dunbar, Mickey (Kay) Dunbar, Arlin (Julie) Dunbar, Kathy Dunbar, Cindy (Joe) Urban, Kris (Kevin) Trokey, as well as many family and friends. Larry always wore a snapback vented hat along with a pocket t-shirt which carried a pen, paper and treats for the grandkids. In honor of Larry, the family welcomes casual attire at his celebration of life.
