Laura L. Persson

Memorials to the Family for Later Designation. Laura Lee Persson was born on August 22, 1959 in Omaha, Nebraska to Charles and Gracie (McMullen) Sanders. She grew up in Millard, where she attended grade school and graduated from Millard High School in 1977. As a young girl, Laura loved animals, especially horses, singing jingles, writing poetry, and was a talented artist, often found drawing or painting. Laura worked at a variety of jobs before being blessed with her greatest job of “Mom” to her children, Greg and Sarah. Laura was a self-proclaimed nomad, raising her family in Omaha, Valley, Weeping Water, Houston, Arkansas, and Dallas. Laura moved back to Nebraska in 1999 to be near family after a devastating house fire and the loss of the family dog, Gracie. Laura enjoyed china painting and drawing, and she often made gifts for Greg and Sarah. Laura was exceptionally creative and enjoyed making crafts, art, poetry, and sculptures. Even though she was self-taught, Laura had professional artistic ability. She loved all animals, whether they had fur, feathers, or scales. Over the years, Laura cared for dogs, cats, rodents, rabbits, birds, horses, and even an iguana. Laura was well-known for her wonderful sense of humor and laughter, and her ability to tell a great story. She was a free spirit, who didn’t judge anyone, but always had advice to give. She was smart, independent, and always enjoyed learning new things. After finding religion later in her life, Laura was a devout Catholic observer for the last 15 years of her life. Laura was very honest and giving, never expecting anything in return. She loved all friends like family and lived life on her own terms. Her family will forever remember their strong, funny, and talented mother and grandmother. Laura was proud to watch her granddaughters grow up into young women. Laura passed away at her home on February 17, 2020 at the age of 60 years, 5 months, and 26 days. She was preceded in death by her father Charles Sanders and her sister Cynthia Trautman. Those continuing to celebrate her life are her son Greg (Lisa) Shurter and daughter Sarah Shurter; 2 granddaughters, Ally and Emma Shurter; mother Gracie Sanders; sister Deborah Poling; brothers David Scott Sanders and Kevin Mark Sanders; several nieces and nephews; loving boyfriend, Mike Merryweather and many beloved pets.
