Michael Eugene Swahn

Michael Eugene Swahn was born on November 9, 1947 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Curtis and Betty (Reikofski) Swahn. Mike spent most of his life in the Valley area. He grew up near Valley where he attended District 22 country school and Waterloo High School. As a young man, Mike enjoyed cars, creating mischief, and swimming in the river with his buddies. Mike enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1963 and served for two tours in Vietnam before receiving an honorable discharge in 1969. He served in the infantry until he was transferred to the motorpool. Mike was married to Elissa Ann Riepl from 1970 thru 1976. They were blessed with two daughters, LexAnn Michele and Shannon Marie. Mike married the love of his life, Joan Farwell, in 1977 at St. Mark*s Lutheran Church in Valley, Nebraska. They were blessed with two sons, Shane Michael and Jacob Brian. In his early career, Mike worked as a painter with family. He spent most of his life as cold storage construction supervisor and recently at Boys Town in the maintenance department. He enjoyed air boating, hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting. Mike loved to spend time with his family, especially the grandchildren. He also enjoyed socializing with his friends - there isn't one person that doesn't have a funny story about Mike. He is remembered as a fun loving man with a quiet strength. Mike truly enjoyed a cold Bud Light with his friends and knew the medicinal value of Blackberry Brandy. He had a zest for life, a tremendous love of his family and is a person the world will sorely miss. Mike passed away suddenly on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 61 years, 11 months and 29 days. He was preceded in death by his parents Curtis and Betty, brother Curtis, Jr. and father-in-law Robert Farwell. Mike is survived by his wife Joan of Valley, Nebraska; daughters LexAnn and son-in-law Matthew Steffens and Shannon Swahn all of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; sons Shane of Fremont, Nebraska and Jacob and daughter-in-law Mandi of Valley, Nebraska; 8 grand children; sister Connie and brother-in-law Robert Renter of Waterloo, Nebraska; sister-in-law Gloria Swahn of Wahoo, Nebraska; and mother-in-law Barb Farwell of Valley, Nebraska.
