Raymond Coert Voorhees

Raymond Coert Voorhees April 21, 1932 - November 15, 2024 Coert, or Corky as he was known in his younger years, was born to Raymond Burtis and Martha Bausman Voorhees in Trenton, NJ. Coert very proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. In this time he was aboard the USS Cone DD-866 (a Gearing-class destroyer) patrolling the Mediterranean Sea. While Coert was abroad his family had moved from Trenton, NJ to Newtown, PA. Upon his return he attended Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Katherine (Kit) Coghlan Morris. They married on December 27th 1955, and settled in Newtown, PA. Coert’s career was selling heavy machinery. This allowed him to travel throughout the United States as well as Scandinavia and Germany in Europe. His spare time in Newtown was spent raising the first four of five daughters: Heidi Anne, Katherine Coghlan, Melissa Rae, and Martha Jane. He was also very involved with the American Legion Morell Smith Post 440, Newtown Presbyterian Church, Historical Society, Newtown Welcome Days and local politics. He served a term as Constable for the village, volunteered on the Fire Department, the Life Squad, brought the first chapter of the Rotary Club to Newtown and helped with the local Boy Scouts. He was also involved in the PTO at Villa Joseph Marie Academy where he created Casino Night, an annual Villa fundraiser which continued for many years. In 1974 the Voorhees family relocated to Lincoln, NE. This is where they welcomed daughter number five, Jennifer Rae. Coert volunteered with the Southeast Fire Department, was very active in the Masons and enjoyed bussing kids to and from school. After retiring to Venice, FL for many years, he continued working with the Masons, was also a guide at The Ringling Museum, Historic Spanish Point and served as Commander at the American Legion Novel Post 159. Coert will be remembered for his kind and gentle ways, love of family and community, wicked humor, mischievous ways and always warmly welcoming friends and strangers into his and Kit’s home without hesitation. Coert is survived by his loving wife of sixty-nine years, Kit. Daughters Heidi Lamkin (Bob) Rising Sun, IN, Katie Voorhees Lincoln, NE, Missy Lamkin (Jerry) Beatrice, NE, Martie Law (Steve) Waterloo, NE, Jennie Voorhees Elkhorn, NE, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his dear sister Alida V. Davis (Philadelphia). His parents, sister Mary Martha Hayes and brother David B. Voorhees have preceded him in death.
