Emma Estella Hughes

Memorials to St. Mark's Lutheran Church Emma Estella (Kobs) Hughes was born on December 23, 1917 in Bennington, Nebraska. She was one of 8 children born to Albert and Sally (Moody) Kobs. Emma grew up near Bennington and was Baptized as an infant and confirmed in 1933 at the Zion Ev. Lutheran church. She attended country school through the 8th grade. Emma married Walter S. Hughes on July 3, 1938 in Papillion, Nebraska and they were blessed with two daughters: Marian and Virginia. Emma raised her family south of Waterloo, Nebraska. Emma worked as a homemaker for Kent Snide for 20 years, in the clothing department at Boys Town for 9 years and at Valhaven in the kitchen. When not working, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, canning and baking. Emma entered many homemade items in the Douglas County Fairs and would win many prizes. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren, playing card games and taking fishing trips. Emma has been a faithful member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Valley, Nebraska. Emma passed away on Monday, September 09, 2019 at Valhaven Nursing Home in Valley, Nebraska at the age of 101 years 8 months and 17 days. She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Sally, husband Walter, brothers Albert Kobs, Jr., Harold Kobs , Walter Kobs and Ernest Kobs and sisters Ethel Schleu, Gladys Hagedorn and Freida Pokorny, five grandchildren, 1 great grandson and great great grandson. Emma is survived by her daughters Marian Smith of Waterloo and Virginia (Tom) Geiser of Norfolk, Nebraska. 6 grandchildren-Cheryl Fisus, Connie Willis, Henry Hert, David Hert, Tami Labar and Scott Smith; 11 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren.
