Shirley Claire Allely

Shirley C. (Magill) Allely was born January 8, 1935 in Herman, Nebraska to Harold and Dorothy (Vinderslev) Magill. She grew up in Herman, where she attended grade school, before graduating from Tekamah High School in 1952. Following her high school graduation, Shirley earned her Teacher’s Certificate at Nebraska Wesleyan University. As a young girl, Shirley was active in choir both at church and in school. On August 1, 1954, Shirley married her high school sweetheart, John Robert Allely at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah, Nebraska, and to this union, four children were born: Brenda, Jan, Steven and Susan. John and Shirley made their homes in Omaha, Fremont, and Elkhorn, Nebraska. John preceded Shirley in death in July 1993. Shirley taught elementary school, and later owned and operated the Pewter Shoppe at Westroads Mall for 20 years. She was an alumnus of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, a member of the Omaha Symphony Guild, and was honored as the O.A.P.A. Woman of the Year in 2005. In addition to her civic groups, Shirley played Bunko, was a member of the Fremont Bridge Club, and was an active member of her Bible study group, called the “Glitter Girls.” Shirley enjoyed going out to eat with her friends, attending class and family reunions, and growing geraniums and petunias in her garden. She loved watching sunsets and visiting the ocean, traveling, and following Husker football; but most of all, Shirley loved talking to people ~ anywhere, anytime, and about any subject; however, the weather was always a favorite topic of conversation. Shirley cherished her grandchildren, and took great pride in following their sporting activities and their chosen careers. She loved taking photographs, always getting right up to people’s faces to get a perfect close up. Shirley will be remembered for the way she dressed, be it her brightly colored jackets, fancy shoes; and for never leaving the house without her lipstick! Shirley died Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the Parson’s House on Eagle Run in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 12 days. She was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Dorothy Magill, husband John Robert Allely, M.D., brother-in-law Richard Barnard, and nephew Spc. 4 Kirk Magill. Shirley is survived by her children: Brenda Allely of Omaha, Jan (Roger) Harris of McKinney, TX, Steven (Vicki) Allely of Elkhorn, and Susan (Mike) Heard of Omaha; 6 grandchildren: Jonathan (Lecy), Allison (Jared), Steven, John, Katie, and Max; great grandson Sawyer; sister Janice Barnard of Tekamah, NE; brother Richard (Sandy) Magill of Alamo, TX; and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed. Shirley C. (Magill) Allely, age 81, of Elkhorn, died 2/20/16. Preceded in death by parents Harold and Dorothy Magill, husband John Robert Allely, M.D., brother-in-law Richard Barnard, and nephew Spc. 4 Kirk Magill. Survived by children; Brenda Allely of Omaha, Jan (Roger) Harris of McKinney, TX, Steven (Vicki) Allely of Elkhorn, Susan (Mike) Heard of Omaha, 6 grandchildren; Jonathan (Lecy), Allison (Jared), Steven, John, Katie, and Max, great grandson Sawyer, sister Janice Barnard of Tekamah, NE, brother Richard (Sandy) Magill of Alamo, TX, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service Thursday 10AM, Westside Church. Interment Evergreen Cemetery, Omaha. Visitation Wednesday from Noon to 8 PM with family receiving friends from 5-8 PM at the funeral home in Elkhorn.
