Cathy Ann Squires

Cathy Ann Squires 07.29.1949 – 05.18.2025 Cathy was born in Denver, CO but spent most of her childhood in Carroll, IA before moving to Omaha. Cathy, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and friend -passed away peacefully Sunday morning. Cathy was the daughter of the late L.A. Jack Smith and Mary Syler Smith. She is survived by her devoted husband, Thomas Squires; her children, Benjamin Squires, Nicholas Squires and Elizabeth Squires; and her cherished grandsons, Thomas Squires, Merek Squires, Paxton Kazebeer and Camren Kazebeer. A Celebration of Life party will be held on July 19, 2025 from 2:00pm - 5:00pm at The Warehouse Grille & Drinkery (15835 C W Haden Dr. - Bennington, NE). Mom My mom was a truly remarkable person. She was a brilliant English teacher, a trusted real estate agent, and a loving Mother and Grandmother. She had a deep love for language and stories. She introduced me to poetry and literature - one piece that really stayed with both of us was The Desiderata. It's message of peace, integrity, and self-respect wasn't just someting she admired - it was something she lived by. As a teacher, she made an impression. The smart students loved her, and the slackers... not s much. She was tough, no-nonsense, and always prepared. She didn't hand out easy grades or empty praise, but she challenged her students to think harder, write better, and take their work seriously. And because of that, she earned a deep and lasting respect. Still, she had her playful side - especially at Christmas, when she'd put on a holiday show with animatronic hamsters dancing and singing. It became a tradition her students never forgot, and it showed that beneath her high standards, she could be silly whimsical. At home, she passed on her love of cooking to me. I especially loved her Hamburger Pie and Chicken and Rice. She loved hosting dinner parties and was meticulous about every detail - down to the place settings. One of her biggest fears was not having enough food for everyone, so she always made way more than enough. It was her way of making sure people felt caredfor and welcomed. I love my Mom forever and miss her everyday.
