Frederick "Barney" Owen Barnhill Jr.

Frederick O. “Barney” Barnhill, Jr. was born June 14, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa to Frederick, Sr. and Hazel (Oldham) Barnhill. The family moved to Knoxville, IA and then to Valley, Nebraska when Barney was 4 years old. Barney grew up in Valley and attended all his schooling there, graduating from Valley High School in 1947. After high school, Barney attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, NE for one year. Barney enlisted in the United States Air Force in December 1948 and proudly served until his honorable discharge in July 1951 holding the rank of Corporal. Barney married Clarice Sibert on October 13, 1956, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn, NE, and the couple spent their lives together in the Elkhorn community and worshipping at Bethany Lutheran. Clarice preceded Barney in death on October 9, 2022. Barney was always working. While growing up in Valley, he worked at the Valley Theatre, the Stock Yards in Valley, unloading sheep, Hormel, two different grocery stores, as a carrier for the Omaha World Herald, and at the dry cleaners in Valley loading coal before and after school. He worked at Mutual of Omaha for 35 years before taking an early retirement in 1988, and then worked part-time for Reichmuth Funeral Home for 15 years. Barney was very active with the Valley American Legion Post #58. He faithfully wore red, white and blue for his country, and cheered on all the Husker sports teams. He enjoyed a cold Pepsi, spent countless hours tending to his yard, and looked forward to numerous hunting and fishing trips through the years. Barney passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 29, 2023, at his apartment at Elk Ridge Independent Living. He was preceded in death by his wife Clarice, parents Frederick and Hazel Barnhill, brothers John and Rodney Barnhill, and sisters Cherie Barnhill and Betty Barnhill Carlson. Barney is survived by his sisters-in-law Sonia Sibert of Omaha and Maxine Barnhill of Fremont, brother-in-law Charles Carlson of Norfolk, NE and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service Monday, 10:30 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church, Elkhorn. Interment Prospect Hill Cemetery, Elkhorn with military honors by the Valley American Legion Post #58. Visitation Sunday Noon-4 PM with family receiving friends from 2-4 PM at Reichmuth Funeral Home, Elkhorn. Memorials to the Valley American Legion Post #58.
