Gerald Eugene Asplin

Gerald Eugene Asplin, 81, passed away peacefully at his home on August 20, 2026, while under hospice care. Gerald was born September 1, 1944, in Stanton, Nebraska, to Floyd and Bessie (Hammon) Asplin. He grew up on the family farm approximately 10 miles north of Stanton, attended Bega Country School, and graduated from Stanton High School in 1962. As a young man, Gerald accepted Christ as his Savior at Bega Sunday School meetings, beginning a faith that remained an important part of his life. On July 1, 1967, Gerald married Linda Ball at Stanton Methodist Church. Gerald and Linda shared 59 years of marriage, raising their family and spending most of their lives in the Stanton area. He was a faithful, loving and kind husband and a devoted father and grandfather. Gerald began tuning pianos while he was still in high school, beginning a career that would span nearly 60 years. He tuned, repaired and restored pianos throughout northeast and north-central Nebraska, working for Behmer’s Music Center before eventually becoming an independent piano tuner. Later in his career, he also did extensive work for Schmitt Music and Keyboard Kastle. Gerald continued tuning pianos until the progression of Huntington’s disease made it impossible for him to continue, around the time he and Linda moved to Omaha in 2020. Gerald served for six years in the Army National Guard from 1965 to 1971. Throughout his life, he was willing to take on a variety of jobs and projects and was rarely afraid to try something new. Away from work, Gerald enjoyed riding horses and driving horses with a buggy or spring wagon. He took great pleasure in growing large gardens and working on projects around his home. He enjoyed experiencing new things and had a way of looking on the bright side of life. Gerald was also an entertaining storyteller and enjoyed sharing stories from his childhood and his experiences growing up on the farm. Those stories became part of the way he passed along memories of his early life to his children and grandchildren. Faith remained an important part of Gerald and Linda’s life together. The loss of their young son Eric to leukemia in 1976 was a deeply significant time in their family’s faith. Reflecting on that experience, Gerald later wrote, “Our whole family learned that knowing Jesus as Savior is truly the most important goal in life!” For many years Gerald and Linda attended Community Bible Church in Norfolk, Nebraska. After moving to Omaha in November 2020 to be closer to their children and grandchildren, they attended Westwood Heights Baptist Church. Gerald is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda; his sons Toby (Shelly) Asplin of Omaha, Matt (Cristina) Asplin of Omaha, Joel (Cheryl) Asplin of the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, and Tim (Jessica) Asplin of Omaha; his sister, Kay Fiscus; and his grandchildren, Andrew, Daniela, Emily, Anika, Derek, Elijah, Felicity and Amelia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Bessie Asplin; his brother, Warren Asplin; and his son, Eric Asplin. Gerald’s life was marked by faith, family, kindness, hard work and an enduring willingness to see what life might bring next. He will be deeply missed by Linda, his children and grandchildren, and the many people whose lives he touched over the years. Funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced by the family.
