Larry Dean Karloff

Larry Dean Karloff was born on September 18, 1933 to Fred and Faye (Hamilton) Karloff on a farm southwest of Yutan. His family moved to a farm south of Leshara where he started school at district #10. In 1942 they moved to Grandpa Frank Karloff’s farm place, 2 miles south of Yutan, where he went to District #8 grade school, then on to Yutan High School. He was baptized March 28, 1934 and confirmed April 10, 1949 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Yutan where he was a life long member. He held many jobs growing up, including working at the Mead Ordinance Plant hauling bombs. Larry served in the US Army from June 23, 1953 to May 19, 1955 and was stationed in Erlangden, Germany with the 30th Field Artillery Battalion. After the military, he started farming in 1956. It was a very dry year, but his land was in the bottom so he had a good 80 bu/acre corn crop. Larry married Julene Thernes of Hooper, Nebraska on September 23, 1956 at Zion Lutheran Church. He was a farmer and fed cattle many years. He was also a member of the Yutan American Legion, the VFW, Saunders County Feeders Association, Elkhorn Antique Tractor Club and Star Dusters Car Club. He also served on the Marble Township Board for many years. Larry was “Mr. Mechanic” and could fix most anything. He enjoyed restoring Antique Tractors and cars. He drove some of them in local parades. He also had quite a large collection of John Deere toys and enjoyed attending reunions of the 30th Field Artillery Army Group for many years. In 1977 Larry and Julene built a new home on the Karloff Family Farm. Then in 2015 they moved into a new home in Yutan. Throughout his life, Larry worked hard and played hard. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, daughter in law, Tye Lynn Karloff and grandson, Austin Karloff; brothers-in-law, Willis Bopp, Louis Thernes, Kenneth Thernes, and Arlen Gnuse. He is survived by his wife, Julene; sisters in law: Marjorie Gnuse, Janice Bopp, Bernice Thernes, and Sharon Thernes; children, Cindy (Mike) Lastovica, Daryld (Connie) Karloff and Steve (Jill) Karloff; grandchildren, Ryan and Russell Karloff, Holly Garmon and Kyle Jackimowicz, Alison & Billy Cale, Kody and Lisa Karloff, Tricia England, Tron and Danelle England, plus numerous great grandchildren. Memorials will be welcomed by the VFW 9844, the American Legion Post 262 and St. John’s Lutheran Church. On Thursday, August 15, 2024, visitation will be held from 4-7 PM with family receiving friends from 5-7 PM at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Yutan, NE. On Friday, August 16, 2024 funeral service will begin at 10:30 AM at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Yutan, NE. Interment at Hollst Lawn Cemetery.
