Phil Reedy

Philip Edward Reedy was born on April 4, 1931 in the living room of his grandmother’s farm near Runnells, Iowa to Edward P. Reedy and Thelma (Vanderpool) Reedy. The early years of his life were spent living in Colorado and on his uncle’s homestead in Wyoming, but he spent much of his childhood living with his grandmother and her family on their farm in Iowa. At age 16, after claiming to be 21, Phil began what would be a long career in the trucking business when he started hauling jeeps from Toledo to Des Moines. He drove a truck for most of the next 50 years for many different companies. In 1969 Phil and his wife Rita purchased Valley Transfer which they ran together until they retired in 1996. Phil loved being on the road and continued to drive a truck for several more years. In 1949 Phil joined the Marine Corp. He served for a year until he was injured in a car accident and was medically discharged just prior to his scheduled deployment to Korea. He spent nearly a year recovering in the VA hospital in Des Moines. After his release he returned to driving a truck and worked part-time as a school bus driver in Altoona, Iowa. It was here that he met his future wife, Rita Gross, who was a teacher there. They were married on July 3, 1954 and moved to Elkhorn in 1958, where they raised their two sons: Phil, Jr. and Paul. Phil was very social and enjoyed spending time with friends. He and Rita always welcomed friends, family, and sometimes even strangers in need for a meal or a place to stay. He had the ability to walk into a café or truck stop in a strange town and after a few minutes was treated like an old friend. He loved playing cards both with family and with his buddies every morning at one of the local bars or the bowling alley. Phil had a great sense of humor and always had a new joke every time you saw him. Phil passed away on Friday, November 9, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife Rita and his brother Chuck. Phil is survived by his son Phil, Jr. and his wife Jane of Davis, CA, and son Paul and his wife Lisa of Arvada, CO; grandson Tony and his wife Becca and their sons: Joey and Levi of Omaha; and grandsons: Sean of Walnut Creek, CA, Ryan of Davis, CA, and Jake of Arvada, CO; and his sister Cathy & Doug Grimm of Independence, MO.
