Suzanne Rae Metzler

Suzanne Rae “Sue” (Palmer) Metzler was born December 23, 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska to Byron “Bud” and June (Flescher) Palmer. Sue grew up in North Omaha where she attended Belvedere Grade School, and went on to graduate from North High School in 1966. As a young girl, Sue had fun babysitting her niece, Sheryl Lynn, loved to clean, and in her free time, swam at Peony Park. Sue married Robert Metzler on July 22, 1967 at the Central Park Church in Omaha, Nebraska, and to this union, two children were born; Darci R. and R. Jason. Sue was an exceptionally outgoing person who loved the holidays. She enjoyed Country Western dancing with Bob, and was an accomplished bowler. Sue also liked to play the slot machines at the casino, and often times, it was hard to get her to leave. The other game that Sue was very good at was pinball. She learned her love of the game from her son, Jason, and would challenge him often, if she wasn’t playing for hours on end on her own. Jason remembers many late nights when he would be tired, and Sue would say, “just one more game”. Jason couldn’t resist, and is sure that he and Mom logged thousands of hours on the machines. Sue even had her own Elvis Pinball Machine at home to keep her skills up. Sometimes Bob and Sue would drive separately to events because they had a hard time pulling her away from the game. Sue was especially proud of the 1932 Ford Roadster that Bob built for her. She loved the car, and also the joy and friendships formed from being part of the Midwest Street Rod Association for the last 16 years. Sue was also an avid gardener. She loved being outside and had many varieties of flowers in her garden. Sue’s greatest love came from being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her Granddaughter JoAnna will miss “frog wrangling” with Sue. Sue passed away at her home in Omaha on July 2, 2009 at the age of 61 years, 6 months, and 9 days. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bud and June, and her father-in-law Orvie. She is survived by her husband Bob, son and daughter-in-law Jason and Karie of Omaha, daughter and son-in-law Darci and Keith Schmidt of Arkansas, 3 grandchildren; twins Troy and Amy Schmidt, and JoAnna Metzler, sisters; Sally Nielsen and Sharon and husband, Ed Falls, 10 nephews, 7 nieces, mother-in-law Maxine, brothers-in-law; Steven and wife Sue Metzler, and Richard and wife, Alice Metzler, and sister-in-law Patty and husband, Bob Taylor.
